I've been experimenting with different rendering materials in a rendering software called "keyshot 4." You can get a free trial here: http://keyshot.com/try/. I've been really impressed with the user interface, especially the real-time rendering in the 3d viewport. Another nice feature is that it can import lots of filetypes, including google sketchup (.skp's). However, the really nice thing about Keyshot is its immense library of really good materials, which you can easily apply to surfaces in your model. True, you can always download some nice materials for any other software, but convenience is a big factor in efficient workflow.
